Mentorship Programme for Secondary School Students (2024/25)

16 students participated in the S.H. Ho College Mentorship Scheme, mentoring Form 4 students from Buddhist Yip Kee Nam Memorial College, and guided them in community service. The team of 32 designed an Easter family fun day for sick children and their families in Ronald McDonald House (Sha Tin). Our students became mentors of secondary school students throughout the 6-month scheme, joining a variety of training sessions together. During the family fun day, mentors and mentees implemented their creative plans, which included art craft workshops, game booths and an Easter egg hunt. Friendships were built between mentors and mentees; our students were also awed by the influence of their service.

Elderly Well-being (2024/25)

8 students joined the Sentimental Grandparents Scheme of S.H. Ho College, preparing a series of recreational activities for seniors in SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home for the Elderly. The activities included Elderly Home visit, CUHK One-day Experience, Christmas party, and collection of life narratives. During the visit, the seniors welcomed the students with excitement, and were active in the mini-games prepared by students. 9 seniors became one-day SHHO student during the One-day Experience, attending diet therapy lecture instructed by two students from the group, enjoying fruit tea suitable for autumn, sight-seeing at the Pavilion of Harmony, and taking “graduation photos” in gowns. Students also collected life narratives from 3 elder ladies, tailor-made life storybooks and videos for them. Listening to their life stories, students were deeply inspired and touched. The 3 ladies were happy to see the products of their life narratives. The student group was awarded the S.H. Ho College Scholarships for General Education (Service-learning Courses).

Cohesion of Ethnic Minority Community in Yuen Long (2024/25)

Partnering with Hong Kong Red Cross, 7 students held cultural art craft workshops for ethnic minority female in Yeun Long. These female individuals expressed that they focus on taking care of their families, and yet were interested in understanding the local culture and learning Cantonese. They found the Fai-Chun writing workshop and paper cutting workshops very interesting. Students were patient in guiding the participants. In early February, students held an interactive Cantonese booth in Kowloon Mosque, sharing Hong Kong culture and local slangs with people from different background.

Elderly Health and Well-being (2024/25)

7 students partnered with Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD Service, creating and leading healthy lifestyle workshops for elderly individuals with early Alzheimer symptoms. It is notable that all the students came from non-medical majors, yet utilized knowledge from their own expertise on the service design. They made a tutorial video on physical exercise, with classic Canto pop songs, as to draw attention and help the elderly participants memorize the exercise. Door sign design workshop was also held by the students, fostering participants’ health through artistic approach. The workshops helped foster not only physical health of elderly, but also their spiritual health. The student group was awarded the S.H. Ho College Scholarships for General Education (Service-learning Courses).

A Compass for SCA Community Resources (2024/25)

Partnering with Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, 6 students produced a community resources manual for spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) patients. It is common that patients and their caretakers face huge stress. The manual allowed patients and caretakers more convenient access to information related rehabilitation training, caretaker support, day care resources. This alleviates their mental pressure, and difficulties in their daily lives. Through focus group interview, students understood the needs of the target group, and formulated the content of the manual, making it a comprehensive and user-friendly one. They hoped this manual will not only provide support to SCA patients and caretakers but also raise the public’s awareness and understanding on the rare disease.

Xiushui County Summer Service-learning Trip (2024/25)

10 students completed the 7-day service-learning trip in early June, 2025. Service delivered included rural home visits, volunteer-teaching in primary school, talks promoting civic-mindedness, and improvement of water infrastructure. The warm talks during home visits allowed students to understand more of the needs and living conditions of rural villagers. Students taught basic English lessons and guided the children to do the water filtering experiment. Students prepared 4 sessions of talks to promote civic-mindedness of the villagers,

the themes included safe use of water, and preserving water sources. The trip has been an experience of making a difference in the lives of others for students. It will greatly contribute to their personal satisfaction and become the motivation for their future endeavors.

SEN Education (2023/24)

Eco-tour on Board with SEN Children

Students partnered with LINK EDUCATION for their service-learning project with SEN children as their service targets. They designed an eco-themed board game and conducted gaming sessions to enhance the SEN students’ organizational and communication skills. A total of 4 sessions were held, involving around 30 children. Both children and parents provided positive feedback, expressing that they enjoyed playing the board game, and wished to join similar activities in the future. Having a wonderful time interacting with the children, students gained valuable hands-on experience serving the SEN community and fostered a more inclusive mindset.

Soft Skills Training: Communication & Organisation

During the board game sessions, participants went on a virtual worldwide eco-tour on the game board. Under the guidance of game masters, the needs of SEN children were addressed with a creative and vivid activity, which allowed the to learn through interesting games.

Students invested considerable effort into designing the workshop, in particular, they rigorously prepared themselves to effectively guide SEN children. The design of the soft skills training program illustrated their creativity and demonstrated their thoughtful approach to the project. Throughout the process, they gained a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by SEN children and learnt to appreciate their unique strengths.

Elderly Health and Wellbeing (2023/24)

Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, Live a Healthier Lifestyle

In collaboration with the Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD Service, students actively engaged in attachments, screening and workshops for elderly individuals who are at risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Through these activities, students assisted the elderly in developing a deeper understanding of brain health and the significant benefits of adjusting their lifestyles, particularly in preventing the disease. A series of workshops focusing on brain health, muscle exercises, and diet management were designed by students for Alzheimer’s prevention, promoting a healthy lifestyle and enhancing overall well-being.

Active Engagement, Healthier Lifestyle Obtained

The booklets designed provided valuable information on brain recognition functions, demonstration of light exercises, and healthy eating tips. Participants found the booklet very useful. During the workshops, students gained firsthand experience of the significance of effective and empathetic communication with the service users. Receiving positive feedback and witnessing lifestyle changes among the elderly, they are pleased with the positive impacts their project had on the community. Moreover, this experience enhanced their confidence and provided insights for their future professions.
