Group 1 - SEN Education
Eco-tour on Board with SEN Children
Students partnered with LINK EDUCATION for their service-learning project with SEN children as their service targets. They designed an eco-themed board game and conducted gaming sessions to enhance the SEN students’ organizational and communication skills. A total of 4 sessions were held, involving around 30 children. Both children and parents provided positive feedback, expressing that they enjoyed playing the board game, and wished to join similar activities in the future. Having a wonderful time interacting with the children, students gained valuable hands-on experience serving the SEN community and fostered a more inclusive mindset.
Soft Skills Training: Communication & Organisation
During the board game sessions, participants went on a virtual worldwide eco-tour on the game board. Under the guidance of game masters, the needs of SEN children were addressed with a creative and vivid activity, which allowed the to learn through interesting games.
Students invested considerable effort into designing the workshop, in particular, they rigorously prepared themselves to effectively guide SEN children. The design of the soft skills training program illustrated their creativity and demonstrated their thoughtful approach to the project. Throughout the process, they gained a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by SEN children and learnt to appreciate their unique strengths.
Group 2 - Elderly Health and Wellbeing
Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease, Live a Healthier Lifestyle
In collaboration with the Charles Kao CUHK BEAT AD Service, students actively engaged in attachments, screening and workshops for elderly individuals who are at risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Through these activities, students assisted the elderly in developing a deeper understanding of brain health and the significant benefits of adjusting their lifestyles, particularly in preventing the disease. A series of workshops focusing on brain health, muscle exercises, and diet management were designed by students for Alzheimer’s prevention, promoting a healthy lifestyle and enhancing overall well-being.
Active Engagement, Healthier Lifestyle Obtained
The booklets designed provided valuable information on brain recognition functions, demonstration of light exercises, and healthy eating tips. Participants found the booklet very useful. During the workshops, students gained firsthand experience of the significance of effective and empathetic communication with the service users. Receiving positive feedback and witnessing lifestyle changes among the elderly, they are pleased with the positive impacts their project had on the community. Moreover, this experience enhanced their confidence and provided insights for their future professions.
Group 3 - Elderly Mental Wellbeing
Raise Awareness of Elderly Mental Health, Care for Community
On 10 March, students organized a street booth concerning elderly mental health in collaboration with the Hong Kong Red Cross. The event aimed to promote the importance of maintaining good mental well-being among the elderly, encouraging them to recognise the importance of good mental well-being and express their emotions while staying connected within the community. Students served as a “listening ear” to the elderly, gaining insights into their daily needs and the mental condition of the elderly nowadays.
Embrace Emotions, Stay Connected to Community
During community investigation in Term 1, students observed that Hong Kong’s elderly struggle to express their emotions without active social engagement. To address this community need, students designed mental health checks and wellness pamphlets for this population. Seeing the active response from the elderly, students realized communication and interaction with people mean a lot to the elderly. They also understood how a little step of caring for our neighbours can be more impactful to the community than we think.
Group 4 - Diversity and Inclusion: Ethnic Minorities
A Language Voyage with Ethnic Minority Children
Collaborating with WEDO GLOBAL, students aimed to empower ethnic minority children through Cantonese language classes. With the goal of helping ethnic minority children integrate into local social groups and foster the development of an environmentally sustainable future, students developed a series of teaching materials with environmental protection as the theme. Apart from raising their environmental awareness of ethnic minority children, the classes also enhanced ethnic minority children’s ability to communicate effectively in the local language.
