The service-learning courses provided me with a great opportunity to communicate with the elderly and understand their needs and values. Not only bringing joy to the care home, but I have also gained new insights in it. I have understood the different needs of various age groups in society during the SLP. It helps us to become active citizens and promote the culture of diversity and inclusion in the community.

The service-learning experience not only trains my communication skills with older adults, but also enlightens me to serve the elderly population after discovering their lovely character and life wisdom. In terms of my personal growth, I have great change in viewing my life. I realised that a meaningful life isn’t tied to productivity or any traditional materialistic or social status achievements. The meaning can come from small acts, for being yourself and doing what interests you.

“Arts background seems irrelevant to elderly care.” This was pretty much my thought before delivering our services. Little did I know, that creativity and integrity are common languages across different age and social groups. Well-planned technical support is one of seniors’ needs, they also long for companionship, inclusion and empowerment. These cannot be measured merely by numbers or KPIs. Without this service-learning journey, I wouldn’t have realized contributing to the community is something simple, yet eye-opening.

Initially, some of our group mates, including myself, viewed the courses as a graduation requirement. However, as we engaged deeper with the participants, we discovered the value of our efforts. The gratitude expressed by them has made us realize and be more mindful of the positive influences we could bring. These small acts of kindness for instance, giving out flowers and Fai Chun have definitely underscored the value of intergenerational connections, and the positive influence young people can have on the lives of elderly.

The mentees in my service-learning project had been incredibly resilient and kind to me, and I would forever be grateful to have met them. As much as I had hoped I have assisted them, they have taught me invaluable lessons on humility and perseverance, how to jump out of my comfort zone and act, and how to really treat everyone equally, that is to, I have finally learned, redistribute my surplus (in time and experience in this case) to the less fortunate.

My service-learning project has bestowed upon me a sense of community and mission as a university student. Through my legal education, laws and policies evolve alongside changing societal mindsets to take care of the vulnerable. Before systematic change can take place, I hold the firm belief that a little bit more understanding and empathy for others make a huge difference, as everyone deserves kindness regardless of our backgrounds. I hope to empower those around me no matter in personal or professional context.

The service-learning courses enhanced my empathy and understanding towards individuals with diverse needs. This experience further developed my ability to innovate solutions and adapt activities to meet individual needs. The feeling of making a difference in the lives of others can greatly contribute to personal satisfaction and motivation for future endeavors.
