At a recent business meeting where we discussed the future directions of the College, we also bade farewell to our Dean of Students, Dr Victor Lau, who will retire soon. Victor is also the warden of Ho Tim Hall of our College. He and his family have been living with the students for 14 years. To date, Victor is the longest-serving warden and longest-staying resident of the College.
As warden, Victor would need to take part in communal dining and many other student activities, majority of which are held in the evenings. Most working adults would prefer leaving his workplace and returning to a home where they can enjoy a peace of mind after a day of work. Yet, Victor has chosen the College to be his home for over a decade.
During the meeting, we invited Victor to share his thoughts regarding the future directions of the College. Somehow, Victor referred us to the past. He shared that a dream of the founding members was to develop a “home” that is “inclusive”, where students “respect” one another regardless of ethnicity, mother tongue, culture, personality, family or educational background, and any other differences between individuals, so that students can discover their strengths and thrive. I am sure that this dream continues to echo in the hearts of our members, students and alumni.
We are grateful to Victor’s wholistic contributions to the development of the College and nourishment of the students over the years. We are also grateful for the support of all his family members as well. Although circumstances keep changing, may this dream of the College and the ties among our members continue.
