Sketching Xinjiang: A Fusion of Captivating Landscapes and Art
15 June 2024
In the summer of 2024, S.H. Ho College organised another sketching tour which lasted for 12 days.
Led by Chinese ink painting teachers from the Ling Ngai Art Association, “Sketching Xinjiang” took place from 4 to 15 June. College students and alumni had a chance to appreciate the magnificent scenery of Xinjiang, and forged deep friendships. With the enthusiastic guidance of the teachers, they learnt various sketching and painting techniques, enhancing their understanding of the art of Chinese painting.
Before the trip, the College had the honour to invite Prof. Ng Yuet Lau, a renowned master of the Lingnan School of Painting and the founding President of the Lingnan Art Association, to introduce students to the unique styles and works of the Lingnan art. Prof. Ng’s live demonstration sparked a profound interest in Chinese painting among College students, enabling them to appreciate Xinjiang’s beauty while deeply experiencing and recording the wonder of nature by sketching.
Setting off from Urumqi, the teachers of the Ling Ngai Art Association and College students visited several places including the Altay, Rainbow Beach, Hemu Village and the Ghost Town. They enjoyed the enchanting views of Sayram Lake and Xiata, experienced the stunning horse viewings in Zhaosu Wetland Park, and discovered the local customs of Urumqi and Yining. In this trip, the College students immersed themselves in mountains, valleys, grasslands, and lakes, gaining a deeper understanding of nature’s charm and power.
In Burqin, students explored the lively night market. A jade shop owner had a friendly conversation with students. He said he came from Chongqing, grew up in the Mongolian grasslands, but eventually settled in Xinjiang. Pointing to a large stone under his feet, he humorously mentioned that jade could be found there and recounted stories of finding jade at Rainbow Beach. The shop owner’s cheerful laughter mingled with the aroma of barbeques in the night market, leaving the students with delightful memories.
On Kalajun Grassland, while riding horses, students talked to a young horse tamer. He shared that he began riding at the age of five and taught the students how to control the horses with reins. He communicated with the horses in Kazakh, showcasing the allure of the local culture. When discussing future plans, the horse tamer expressed his desire to learn more skills and achieved greater things. His aspirations and dreams inspired the students.
After 12 days, the College students not only broadened their horizons, but also formed lasting friendships. The teachers and students lived and painted together at the major scenic spots, strengthening their bonds. “Sketching Xinjiang” became a perfect fusion of art and nature, creating an unforgettable journey of growth. The College will continue to uphold its educational vision of holistic development, providing opportunities for students to gain rich learning and life experiences outside the classroom.
