Prof. Simon Ng Siu-man: Risk for families of patients with high-risk polyps of having the same disease is 6 times higher

CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine announced yesterday the outcome of a large-scale prospective study they conducted earlier, which is the first of its kind globally. They discovered that if patients have ‘high-risk polyps’ (or ‘precancerous adenomas’) in their large intestines, the risk for their immediate siblings of having the same disease is 6 times higher. Prof. Simon Ng Siu-man is an expert in colorectal surgery from the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, CUHK, and a fellow of S.H. Ho College. He said that since colorectal cancer mainly developed gradually from intestinal polyps (adenomas), if intestinal polyps could be discovered and removed before they transformed to cancerous tumors, the chance of getting colorectal cancer would be lowered effectively.
