Prof. Ng Yuet-lau: Lingnan School of Painting

Lingnan Chinese Painting could be traced to two progenitors in Qing dynasty, the cousins Ju Chao and Ju Lian. Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng, and Chen Shuren were their most famous followers, becoming known as the ‘Three Masters of Lingnan’. Prof. Ng Yuet-lau, a closed disciple of Chao Shaoang who was under tutelage of Gao Qifeng, has been assiduous in promoting the Lingnan painting. The Lingnan School focuses on sketching in nature, where different objects found could be artistic themes. Bright colours adopted in Lingnan painting have marked a watershed from other Chinese painting schools. The ‘Lingnan Images—Paintings by Prof. Ng Yuet-lau and Prof. Philip Chiu’ held at S.H. Ho College, CUHK is the first location of the Lingnan masters’ roving exhibition. The artworks, altogether more than 50 pieces, range from their representative Chinese paintings, paintings of Ling Ngai Association members, to the works by students of S.H. Ho College and Christian Zheng Sheng College. The themes cover landscapes, flowers and birds, as well as local customs and humanity aspects. Having appreciated the refined artworks, visitors would have an overall impression of the multi-faceted dimensions of Lingnan Art. Prof. Ng Yuet-lau is an Honorary Fellow of S.H. Ho College, CUHK.
