The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong approved the appointment of Prof. Philip Chiu as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, with effect from 1 February, 2024.  He will succeed Prof. Francis Chan, who has been serving CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine as Dean for over 10 years. Prof. Chiu is a Fellow of S.H. Ho. College.

Prof. Chiu joined CU Medicine in 2005, and is currently Associate Dean (External Affairs) of CU Medicine; Professor and Chief of Division of Upper GI and Metabolic Surgery, Department of Surgery; Director of Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center supported by InnoHK; Director of Endoscopy Centre, CUHK’s Institute of Digestive Disease; Director of CUHK Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine.

Prof. Chiu graduated from CU Medicine in 1994, became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2001; and received his Doctor of Medicine from CUHK in 2009.

This year’s Hamlyn Symposium was themed “Immersive Tech: The Future of Medicine”. Prof. Chiu delivered an insightful lecture “Robotic Surgery: Beyond Our Senses”, which was a culmination of Prof Chiu’s decades of research in the field of robotic surgery, endoscopy as well as the future of nanorobotics interventions where current and future surgical technologies will extend beyond human senses for treatment of diseases at an early stage. This will allow patients to have a better quality of life and recovery without human organ resection. Among 500 delegates joining the symposium including clinicians, engineers and industrial representatives, Prof Chiu’s keynote lecture received the highest votes to be awarded the Karl-Storz-Harold Hopkins Golden Telescope Award.
