Legacy of a Legendary Founding Master
Founding Master Prof. Samuel Sun and his wife Dr. Piera Sun returned Hong Kong in late November to attend our 10th Graduation Ceremony. Prof. Sun retired as Master in 2018 and moved to USA along with Piera. Although I did not know them personally as I joined the College only recently, I am aware that they are highly respected by alumni and staff of the College. Over past few weeks, I was privileged to have met our legendary Founding Master and his wife.
As I observed the interaction between Master Sun and Piera with our alumni and listening to stories shared by alumni, I noted that they had left an invaluable legacy to our alumni. It is love. Master Sun had not only assigned the identity of “Home away from Home” for our College. More importantly, they had lived out love, which is the most important element of a home, yet is lacking in many homes nowadays. Master Sun and Piera see every student as precious, irrespective of what programme they studied in or which school or background they came from. They spent time with students in their ups and downs, providing timely care, advice, encouragement, as well as rebuke them when necessary. In Prof. Sun’s speech at the Homecoming Dinner, he shared his hope that they can become better and happier persons, the ways of how it can be achieved, and his confidence that they can do it. During the dinner, Piera shared with me that their time spent with the students are the best time of their lives. An alumna posted in her Facebook that she learnt how to love after experiencing their love.
Brothers and sisters, what a privilege to have such a legendary Founding Master and his wife! May they be showered with happiness and health. Let us persevere in making our College a home by living out their legacy in our capacity. For those still with exams coming up, add oil!
