The SHHO’s 12 in Nepal
26 August 2024
I joined a service-learning trip together with 12 members (11 students and 1 alumna) and 1 staff member of S.H. Ho College (SHHO) to Nepal in early July. A primary task was to conduct a series of classes to students (year 1-9) at a village school located up in a mountain (at an altitude of 1300m) near Pokhara over one and a half weeks. We also conducted a day of health checks and medical consultations for the villagers. This was the first attempt of our College in organising a service-learning trip to Nepal.
The challenges we faced lied in not only with delivering services that were relevant to people of different cultures, but also in adapting to the living conditions (e.g., limited electricity and water supply) up in the village and in coping with unexpected conditions (e.g., heavy rain and illnesses). Despite all the obstacles, our efforts turned out to be highly successful! The responses of the village students were overwhelmingly positive.
I was truly impressed by team members’ hard work, humility, endurance, talents, and by their hearts to serve. Although our members came from varying faculties, years of study, and cultures, they worked together with mutual respect and without any complaints, leveraging one another’s strengths, and providing support to one another in achieving our tasks. A big thanks also go to our staff member, Miss Yan Lai, for being a big sister throughout the journey.
I must salute to the SHHO’s 12 in living out the values of our College and I am truly proud of them all.
