Making History

20 January 2026

Our rowing team won the overall champion in the inter-college rowing competition in early January. This is not only the first time that we won this title, but also the first time that we won an overall championship in any inter-college sports competition. Usually, champion goes to larger colleges. A reason is that their pools of recruiting better athletes is larger. Last week, the Captains (To Hon Ming and Charlotte Leung) and Vice-Captain (Brian Ng) of our rowing team shared with me some reasons why we won the championship:

1. We had the highest number of participants so that we could participate in all the races (x1, x2, x4, x8 of both female and male categories) of the competition.
2. Apart from regular practice since October last year, we practiced every day from 7am to 3pm for 3 weeks before the race. Apart from the strength of individual member, the speed of the boat also depends on the synchronization of the stroke. Synchronization among the members depends on practice. There is no short cut.
3. We gave priority to the practice. Many had rescheduled other activities (e.g., holiday trips) for the practice. All were serious in their commitments.
4. We were united in heart and high in spirit, doing our best for the races.

Making history in a team sport depends on the active participation of many serious members who are willing to make sacrifices for the sake of a common dream. I am proud of our rowers, as well as other serious participants of other inter-college competitions. Salute particularly to our Captains who have made extra sacrifice for the common good.
