Focus amidst the Fog
11 March 2025
Thick fog covered Hong Kong in recent weeks. Amidst the fog, we could hardly see things ahead of us. The fog reminds me of the conversations I had with several students and alumni in recent months, who shared with me their uncertainties about their future careers. Amidst uncertainty, how should we cope with challenges?
At our High Table Dinner in January, a student asked our guest speaker, Miss Vivian Kong (Olympic Gold Medalist), how she coped with the immense stress she faced during the final match of the Women’s Individual Épée at Paris Olympics 2024, where she trailed at 1-7. Vivian shared with the audience that during that period, she tried her best to focus on correcting her past mistakes and improving her next move. This somehow echoed what my late father often reminded me when I was young: “Although you may not control the results, you can control how hard you try. If you focus on working hard and improving yourself, when the economy is unfavourable, you will be the last one to be fired. On the other hand, when the economy is favourable, you will be the first one to get promoted.”
Amidst uncertainty, focus simply on improving your next move. I believe that if you have tried your best, doors will be opened for you. Although that “door” may not be your initial plan, you will eventually come to appreciate that it may be the best “door” for you. So, keep going and add oil, a bright future is ahead of you!
